VoIP and IMS Testing and Monitoring

Empirix Expands IMS Testing Portfolio with Hammer for IMS

As IMS networks move from design to deployment, vendors and service providers have identified many new test requirements. Enhancements to Empirix’s Hammer for IMS platform improve the product’s ability to test IMS applications, devices and networks, and extend call generation and analysis capabilities for IMS. These enhancements include additional protocol support, new IMS infrastructure device emulations, and full incorporation of 3GPP SIP extensions for complete emulation of an IMS User Element.

“As IMS moves from theory to reality, ensuring quality in IMS networks is becoming a major concern for both NEMs and service providers,” said Duane Sword, Empirix’s Vice President of Product Management. “The Hammer for IMS portfolio provides the industry’s most comprehensive set of IMS test and analysis tools, offering a full suite of tests for the entire IMS lifecycle, from NEM development, proof-of-concept labs and interoperability, to actual trials and deployments.”

Getting Users to Raise their Voice

While experts predict that Voice-over-IP usage will double in the next few years, there are still challenges to fostering the widespread adoption of VoIP technology—chief among them, a lack of training.

In this article in ComputerWeekly.com, Duane Sword, Vice President of Product Management at Empirix, explains that businesses want to go live at the lowest cost, so there is not a lot of space or money for training IT staff or end users. The result is that the network is not optimized for voice, and end users are not prepared for—and will not tolerate—poor voice quality or echo. “There is a training gap. People assessing suppliers do not know the pitfalls or ‘gotchas’ of the products,” Sword said. “The worst situation is when end users pick up the phone, do not hear a dial tone and put it down again.”
