VoIP and IMS Testing and Monitoring
Empirix Unveils Hammer G5—the Most Complete VoIP Test Platform Available Today
Ensuring quality in today’s VoIP, NGN, and IMS devices and networks requires multiple testing stages and test types, each with their own unique test requirements and personnel. This complexity can mean significant investment throughout the product development and service deployment lifecycles.

Empirix’s fifth-generation Hammer G5 simplifies the test environment and maximizes the value of your testing investment. Hammer G5 combines extensive feature testing and ultra-scalable load testing in a single GUI to create a comprehensive test environment that can be used throughout the testing lifecycle—from early stage unit testing in R&D to service verification in trial labs.

Since 1992, the Hammer product line has been focused on the end-to-end user experience, with a particular emphasis on voice applications. The new Hammer G5 platform is built on Empirix’s Hammer FX VoIP feature testing platform and Hammer NXT high-density VoIP load test platform, offering the combined capabilities of both in a unified user and programming interface. Fifteen Years of (Empirix) Hammer, which appeared on vonmag.com, says “The fifth generation product represents 15 years of experience in real-time application testing” for Empirix.

In If VoIP Had a Hammer: It’d hammer out functional, load testing all over this LAN, SD Times reports, “Hammer G5 offers, for the first time, the ability to test push-to-talk systems such as those offered by Sprint. Other new tests allow developers to check for SIP errors by sending out malformed packets and cataloging the resultant effects on the VoIP network. G5 also includes new denial-of-service attack scenarios to test for the effects of malicious attacks on VoIP networks.”

The Hammer G5 will be most valuable to the large and globally installed base of Hammer customers, which account for more than four million test ports. In addition, there are a variety of upgrade packages for customers varying from software-only to hardware-accelerated for performance test, with no impact to any scripting and automation packages. Empirix is also offering special limited time offers on select new system bundles including software-only, 2U server-based, and blade server-based systems. Empirix Leads Testing and IMS Session Analysis at IMS Forum Plugfest III
Hammer portfolio helps IMS Forum expand research efforts

Designed to foster interoperability and certification for IMS services and applications, the IMS Forum’s third Plugfest was held in October at the University of New Hampshire Interoperability Lab. Throughout the event Empirix’s Hammer portfolio was used to create Home Subscriber Server (HSS) interactions, Policy Decision Function (PDF) interactions for core networks and messaging to help the IMS Forum expand its research into IMS fixed mobile convergence.

“We were able to demonstrate more of our emulation and authentication capabilities with a majority of the network elements now supporting AKA and additional Diameter interfaces,” said Gordon Beith, Senior Product Manager at Empirix. “It was great to see how far IMS implementations had come in the past nine months, proving that IMS interoperability is a reality and not a ‘pipe-dream.’”

The Making of Ensuring a Quality IMS Experience
VON Magazine calls Empirix book “the first practical guide to testing and monitoring IMS”

In a review of Ensuring a Quality IMS Experience by Empirix Product Marketing Manager Chad Hart, VON Magazine describes the reality of implementing working IMS solutions as more challenging and complex than the marketing hype, indicating that practical knowledge of how to test and monitor IMS has been in short supply. Until now.

Engineers, operational personnel, and others can find help in Hart’s book, which examines methods for testing and monitoring the many facets of IMS and includes best practices and recommendations. “If you are really interested in understanding how IMS works and how to prove that IMS does work, this is the book,” Hart says.

Monitoring the Performance of IP Centrex Services
Light Reading article features comments from Empirix’s Dan Teichman, Senior Product Marketing Manager

Service providers must overcome a number of challenges to ensure the successful testing and monitoring of IP Centrex services, and Light Reading points to call correlation as among the most complex. “Typically, an enterprise using IP Centrex will populate the SIP from-field (used to specify the endpoint of an outgoing VOIP call) with the enterprise’s main common number. This makes it difficult to correlate calls with their real endpoints in the event of quality problems,” the article says.

“We know in reality there are tens, perhaps hundreds, of extensions behind that main number, and the challenge for a monitoring system is to correlate multiple calls that all appear to come from the same number, but which really need to be associated by the relevant data for individual calls, such that proper diagnostics and analysis can be done,” says Empirix’s Dan Teichman.
