VoIP and IMS Testing and Monitoring

Empirix Writes the Book on IMS Quality
Ensuring a Quality IMS Experience offers insight into key testing and monitoring issues affecting IMS adoption

Empirix's new book, Ensuring a Quality IMS Experience: A Practical Guide to Testing and Monitoring IP Multimedia Subsystems and Services, was written to serve as a unique IMS resource for anyone responsible for verifying and maintaining the integrity of new IMS-based devices, applications, and networks. It is a valuable reference guide to testing IMS devices, real-world IMS network issues, strategies for testing new IMS-based applications, industry best practices for ensuring quality, and more.

Chad Hart, the book's author and a product marketing manager at Empirix, tapped the company's more than 100 collective years of industry experience working with vendors and service providers to write the book. "As important as IMS has become, it is still a relatively immature technology," said Hart. "We wanted share information about some of the issues in implementing and ensuring quality in IMS networks, and show how these challenges could be overcome. IMS quality is possible and we hope by having a book like this people can successfully develop and deploy the IMS architecture with much more confidence."

"The ability to quickly diagnose and resolve system issues is the fundamental element of service assurance that operators require to meet their customers' expectations of reliable, high-quality service," said Bruce McLeod, Executive Director, Voice Technology & Engineering, Cox Communications. "The operators that conquer these challenges will be the ones to succeed in the next-generation services environment. Guidelines like those discussed in this book form the foundation of a reliable service framework in IMS."

Empirix Expands Coverage at Second IMS Forum Plugfest:
Hammer for IMS deployed to evaluate multivendor IMS interoperability

Organized to examine the interoperability of IMS "quadruple-play" applications and services for voice, video, and mobility, the IMS Forum's second Plugfest event was held in June at the University of New Hampshire's Interoperability Lab. Empirix's Hammer portfolio was deployed throughout the event to simulate SIP and IMS end users and emulate IMS infrastructure devices, including the Diameter-based HSS.

"We're glad to have Empirix, with its demonstrated expertise in testing and monitoring complex technologies, participating in the second consecutive Plugfest event, and we're excited to have them as one of our Platinum sponsors as well," said Michael Khalilian, Chairman and President of the IMS Forum and CTO of Pervasip Corp.

"Having participated in the first IMS Forum Plugfest, which was a huge success for both Empirix as well as the Forum itself, we were ready to come back for round two," said Gordon Beith, Senior Product Manager at Empirix and an active contributor to the IMS Forum. "As Empirix focuses heavily on creating solutions that enable companies to feel confident about their IMS adoption plans, our role in the second Plugfest will give us an opportunity to demonstrate Empirix's expertise and knowledge in helping vendors interoperate in an IMS environment."

Empirix's Solutions Tested at Second IMS Forum Plugfest
Empirix announces its findings from participation in the IMS Forum®’s Second Plugfest event

As a Platinum sponsor of the IMS Forum®'s Second Plugfest event Empirix provided its Hammer Testing and Monitoring Portfolio to generate IMS calls, emulate IMS infrastructure, and offer detailed diagnostics and analysis to assist other participants in the Plugfest. As a result, Empirix found its solutions were able to quickly identify interoperability issues and adapt to IMS standards and implementation challenges.

Empirix was also able to demonstrate the power and flexibility of its IMS SIP UE call/session generation and its P-CSCF and HSS device emulations in a variety of different topologies.

"We are pleased to have had Empirix both sponsor and participate again in our Plugfest II," said Michael Khalilian, Chairman and President of the IMS Forum. "The company has made a strong contribution to the testing and de-bugging of IMS services and we look forward to working closely together on future Plugfests."

Hammer for IMS Earns the First-Annual Leadership Award from IMS Magazine
Empirix recognized for leadership in IMS quality assurance and for enabling IMS adoption

Empirix's Hammer for IMS received the First-Annual IMS Leadership Award from TMC's IMS Magazine. Empirix was recognized for its demonstrated thought leadership in IMS quality assurance and for the role Hammer for IMS has played in enabling the successful adoption of the IMS architecture.

"Growth in IMS exploded in 2006 as we saw the launch of several new solutions," said Rich Tehrani, President of TMC. "As the leading resource for IMS, we thought it fitting for IMS Magazine to establish an award to identify those companies that are doing an incredible job launching the products and services that will transform the industry. Testing for Real World VoIP Problem Scenarios
VoIP networks are subject to a number of known issues that are just beginning to become relevant as VoIP reaches the mainstream. Some of the most common issues include:
  • Mass calling events – when an atypically large number of users attempts to make calls within a specified time period, stressing the network beyond its planned utilization;
  • Power outage restoration – a flood of registration messages occurs when power is restored after an outage;
  • Peer network floods – peer networks can unintentionally overload other networks if interconnecting equipment is not configured properly; and
  • Malicious attacks – hackers can mimic the above scenarios and cause a number of other nuisances and security breaches.

Surprisingly, many Tier 1 carriers have already found themselves unprepared for these scenarios and as a result, they have experienced major outages and service degradation. Drawing off actual carrier experiences, this presentation examines each of these VoIP issues in detail and provides guidelines on how to set up tests, simulate, and analyze each one in the lab so that they can be avoided in the field.

Monitoring the Performance of IP Centrex Services
Telecom operators rolling out IP Centrex services need to make doubly sure that performance lives up to expectations, partly because it's new territory for them and partly because a good experience could encourage customers to take things further, while a poor experience could put them off from further experimentation for a considerable time. This presentation discusses methods for ensuring that everything goes well.

Tips and Tricks

Loopback Adapter vs. Loopback Driver
There is some confusion with regard to the terms "Loopback Adapter" and "Loopback driver".

The "Loopback Adapter" is otherwise known as the Microsoft Loopback Adapter, which Microsoft describes as a testing tool that can be used in a virtual networking environment when network access is not available. Put more simply, the Microsoft Loopback Adapter is a "virtual NIC." There is no hardware associated with it, but IP addresses and subnet masks can be configured on the virtual adapter.

Simultaneous Usage of Hammer XMS
As a Hammer XMS Administrator, you may need to get an estimate of simultaneous usage of the Hammer XMS.

Here is one method for doing so:
Log into the system via SSH and perform the command 'netstat -an |grep 80'. This step will show a list of all current active streams on the system and what IP's are connected. Remember, if someone logs in and is not doing anything, it is not considered an active session. The netstat only reflects an active connection when the user is actually conducting searches/queries.
