VoIP and IMS Testing and Monitoring

Juniper Networks Selects Empirix for NGN Testing

Juniper Networks, a developer of carrier-class and enterprise routers and security platforms, has chosen Empirix’s Hammer testing solution to verify the functionality, reliability, and scalability of its innovative product line.

"We required a complete load test solution to validate the performance and scalability requirements of our world-class carrier customers,” said Naren Prabhu, vice president at Juniper Networks. “In looking for this solution, we were hoping to avoid the high cost of installing and running numerous actual network elements from various vendors, which are not optimized for running and executing test scenarios. After a thorough search, we found Empirix’s Hammer was the only solution capable of the necessary performance testing, while at the same time providing programming flexibility and functionality test capabilities."

"IMS Universe: the Same in all Directions" - Telephony Online article features Empirix's Duane Sword

A recent article in Telephony Online looked at the evolving adoption of IP multimedia subsystem architecture. Industry experts quoted in the article—including Empirix Vice President of Product Management and Marketing Duane Sword—counseled patience.

According to the article, Empirix "has a good sense of where IMS readiness stands."

"I do think that people believed things would have moved much more aggressively and be at the point of testing millions of subscribers and feature quality, but we're not there yet," said Sword.

Empirix Tests IMS Readiness at IMS Forum Plugfest

Designed to evaluate key services supported by the IMS reference architecture, the IMS Forum’s first Plugfest event was held in January at the University of New Hampshire’s Interoperability Lab. Empirix’s Hammer for IMS was deployed throughout the event to conduct IP phone, infrastructure, and service interoperability testing.

"With an already strong company-wide focus on developing IMS-enabled solutions, we were happy to participate in the IMS Forum’s first-annual Plugfest and test some of the key scenarios required for true IMS implementation," said Gordon Beith, senior product manager at Empirix, and an active contributor to the IMS Forum.

"With Empirix participating in our first Plugfest event, we were able to execute on more testing and monitoring scenarios, which made for a much more productive, and interesting, week," said Michael Khalilian, president of the IMS Forum.

Empirix Launches New Load Testing Solution for IMS and PacketCable

The latest version of Empirix’s flagship Hammer NXT solution—Hammer NXT v6—is an integrated carrier-class IP telephony test platform that provides customers with support for cable, IMS, and other NGN requirements.

Hammer NXT v6 enables cable MSOs to conduct efficient load testing of VoIP networks, ensuring high service quality as networks scale to millions of users. Hammer NXT v6 also supports the movement to IMS via PacketCable specifications and enables stress testing of Fixed-Mobile Convergence, where users can roam from WiFi services on traditional IP networks to cellular networks through the support of wireless codecs and other IMS-related requirements.

"With IMS and PacketCable becoming a reality, testing to ensure stability, robustness, and performance before deployment is increasingly important to network equipment manufacturers and service providers alike,” said Duane Sword, vice president of Product Management at Empirix. ”Empirix has built upon its award-winning prior releases to provide the most compact, fully-integrated, and highly functional VoIP load tester on the market in Hammer NXT v6."

CT Labs Leverages Empirix Solutions: Groundbreaking test verifies performance of CommuniGate Pro Architecture

CT Labs, a leading supplier of independent product testing, Q/A, and analysis services for the converged communications industry, leveraged Empirix solutions to conduct performance tests on the CommuniGate Pro Architecture, a scalable, IMS-ready VoIP-service platform.

CT Labs sought to verify the performance of the CommuniGate Pro architecture under realistic traffic flows and implemented a real-world residential access network traffic model in its lab to emulate 200,000 VoIP subscribers. The model incorporated Hammer traffic generators to reflect real-world access network traffic and OneSight to collect key performance and availability metrics logged during each of the multiserver test runs and correlated with the performance results collected from the Empirix Hammer test platforms.

Tips and Tricks

How to use Signaling Editor to determine if a message conforms to the proper syntax
You may encounter situations in which Hammer FX IP fails to properly recognize an incoming message, but it may not be obvious what is wrong with that message. Certainly you could go through the message line by line looking for the offending locations, but an alternative solution is to use the Signaling Editor parser to more quickly find the error.

Coping with Congestion: Maintaining VoIP Service Quality
This presentation focuses on how VoIP service providers can ensure service quality under conditions of network congestion. It begins by explaining typical fault conditions and other events under which network congestion can occur, such as registration floods that can follow the recovery from a power outage. In addition, the presentation reviews testing methodology to ensure a service provider’s network is properly configured to handle network congestion, as well as requirements for monitoring, to know when and how VoIP service quality is affected. Finally, the presentation identifies recommendations for actions that can be taken to mitigate the effects of network congestion.
