General Partner, Matrix Partners
Timothy A. Barrows, based in the Waltham, MA office of Matrix, has more than 21 years of experience in the venture industry, investing in early-stage information technology companies.
Tim has served or currently serves on the Boards of Directors of OnDisplay (IPO, acquired by Vignette), SilverStream Software (IPO, acquired by Novell), Sycamore Networks (NASDAQ: SCMR), Tivoli Systems (IPO, acquired by IBM ), Cimaron Communications (acquired by AMCC), Empirix, Eroom (acquired by Documentum), FirstSense Software (acquired by Concord Communications), Intelliden, Kalido, LiveVault (acquired by Iron Mountain), Relicore (acquired by Symantec), Starent Networks, Veritech (acquired by SDLI) and Watermark Software (acquired by FileNet).
Prior to joining Matrix, Tim worked in Corporate Finance, Mergers and Acquisitions at Merrill Lynch Capital Markets. He graduated from Williams College with a major in Political-Economics, and from Stanford University with a Masters in Business Administration.

A CPA with degrees from Bentley College and the University of Rhode Island, Deysher is currently president of Deysher Advisory Services, a consultancy that assists startup companies. She also serves on the Bentley College Board of Trustees and on the Advisory Boards of Narad Networks and BinOptics.
General (founding) Partner, Matrix Partners
Paul Ferri, a venture capitalist for more than 30 years, was the founding partner of Matrix Partners in 1982. Prior to Matrix, he founded Hellman Ferri Investment Associates (1977 to 1982) and was a general partner of WestVen Management (1970 to 1978).
The family of Matrix Partnerships has achieved industry record-setting returns over the last decade. In 2003, Ferri was inducted into the Private Equity Hall of Fame, citing his work "in founding and helping to build Matrix Partners into one of the most successful venture firms in the industry." In February 2001, Forbes magazine selected Ferri as one of the Top 20 Venture Investors of all time and the “Best VC in Boston.” Also, in 2001, Ferri received the Massachusetts Telecommunications Council Award for “Venture Capitalist of the Year.”
Paul serves or previously served on the Boards of Directors of Airvana, Applix, ArrowPoint Communications, Ascend Communications, Atria Software, Aylus Networks, Banctec, Bytex, Cascade Communications, Codex Corporation, Empirix, Paradyne, Redstone Communications, Sonus Networks, Stratus Computer, Sycamore Networks, Veveo, VideoServer, Winphoria Networks, Xyplex and numerous other private companies.
He holds a Master of Business Administration degree from Columbia University, a Master of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from Polytechnic Institute of New York, and a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering degree from Cornell University.
Chairman of the Board
Greg is a seasoned executive with more than 20 years’ experience in the management and strategic development of emerging software and hardware networking companies in both the enterprise and carrier markets. As Executive Chairman of Empirix, Greg works closely with Empirix customers and its senior management team to shape the company’s strategic direction and ensure that its product and services remain closely aligned with customer needs.
Most recently he was CEO of Quallaby, a carrier-class network management software vendor that was acquired by Micromuse in 2005. Prior to Quallaby, Greg was CEO and co-founder of Cadia Networks, a networking hardware manufacturer that was acquired by Fore Corporation. Greg has also held senior management positions at Xyplex Corporation and Microcom, Inc.
Greg holds a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Tufts University and an MBA from MIT's Sloan School of Management.
Chief Executive Officer
Bringing over 25 years of industry experience to the role, John D’Anna is Chief Executive Officer of Empirix, Inc. Prior to joining the company, D’Anna served as senior vice president of global sales and services for JDSU’s Test & Measurement Product Group. Under D’Anna’s leadership, JDSU’s Communications Test & Measurement sales organization built strategic relationships with some of the world’s largest communications service providers and equipment manufacturers. In addition, D’Anna led the company’s global services group, a multinational organization focused on delivering services in support of JDSU’s Systems & Software solutions for deployment and maintenance, product support services, consulting and educational services.
D’Anna joined JDSU in August 2005 with the acquisition of Acterna, where he was executive vice president of global sales and services. Before joining Acterna, D’Anna was field sales representative for Hewlett-Packard’s Test & Measurement Group from 1984 to 1990.
D’Anna is a member of the Advisory Board for the Newark College of Engineering, the engineering college of the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He earned a Bachelor of Science degree in electrical engineering from the New Jersey Institute of Technology and received a Masters of Business Administration in finance from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at MIT, Head of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department
Professor Guttag received a bachelor's degree in English from Brown University in 1971, and a master's degree in applied mathematics from Brown in 1972. In 1975, he received a doctorate in computer science from the University of Toronto. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Southern California from 1975-1978, and joined the MIT faculty in 1979.
From 1993 to 1998, Professor Guttag served as Associate Department Head for Computer Science of MIT's Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Department. From January of 1999 through August of 2004, Professor Guttag served Head of that department. EECS, with approximately 1800 students and 125 faculty members, is the largest (and, of course, best) department at MIT.
Professor Guttag also co-heads the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory's Networks and Mobile Systems Group. This group studies issues related to computer networks, applications of networked and mobile systems, and advanced software-based medical instrumentation and decision systems. Professor Guttag has also done research, published, and lectured in the areas of software defined radios, software engineering, mechanical theorem proving, and hardware verification.
Professor Guttag currently serves on the technical advisory board of Vanu, Inc., on the Board of Directors of Empirix and Avid Technologies, and on the Board of Trustees of the MGH Institute of Health Professions. He is also a Fellow of the ACM and a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
