Femtocells
Background
With the emergence of Smartphones there has been an explosion in mobile usage and demand for bandwidth. Making the right choices on RAN design and cell site deployment is critical to meeting this consumer demand. Femtocells have emerged as a valuable tool for Mobile Network Operators (MNOs), providing additional coverage in commercial and residential buildings at significantly lower cost than macro deployments.
Femtocells deployments are made possible by leveraging existing broadband connection and VoIP technology. As such, they present an operational challenge for MNOs – namely ensuring a consistent customer experience across IP and TDM environments. In particular, MNOs need to closely manage handoffs between femto and macro cells as well as monitor voice quality between VoIP and circuit switched network elements.
